Wood selection – where material and idea meet

For this special project, I deliberately chose a one-piece top and a one-piece back.
The ribs come from the same piece of maple as the back – creating a harmonious whole where grain and color flow naturally into each other.
The top is made from fine-grained spruce from the Salzkammergut region. I have had a close connection to this wood for many years – it comes from my home region, and I use spruce from these stocks for almost all of my instruments. It is known for its even structure and clear, resonant tone.
The maple for the back and ribs comes from Bosnia, a region where the old masters also sourced their tonewood.
The piece was originally intended for a one-piece cello back. Due to its particular grain and the risk of cracking in such a large format over time, I decided instead to cut it into several one-piece violin backs. This way, the exceptional wood could be used to its full potential – and each instrument now carries a piece of this special story within it.

A little hint at the end: there will be a twin instrument ;-)
